WHAT IS MELASMA?

Melasma is often referred to as the 'mask of pregnancy' due to its common appearance during this phase. Another term used is Chloasma. This condition results in the formation of dark patches on the skin, primarily on the face, including the cheekbones, nose, and forehead. However, it can appear on other body parts too. It's a frequent skin concern affecting a considerable number of people, and while men can experience it, it predominantly impacts women, especially those with darker skin tones. The onset of melasma can occur at various life stages, such as during puberty or pregnancy.

TYPES OF MELASMA

There are primarily three categories of melasma: Dermal, Epidermal, and Mixed. The distinction between these types lies in the depth of pigmentation, the clarity of their borders, their colour, and their patterns. Among these, mixed melasma is witnessed most frequently.

WHAT CAUSES MELASMA?

The development of melasma is primarily attributed to a blend of genetic, hormonal, and environmental catalysts. It is essentially a consequence of an escalation in melanin production, the pigment offering colour to our skin. Various triggers, ranging from sun exposure to hormonal shifts (especially during pregnancy), specific medications, and even heightened stress, can stimulate this increased melanin production. The involvement of hormonal contraceptives in prompting pigment-producing cells, melanocytes, has been recognised. Genetics also plays its part in determining susceptibility to the condition.

PROTECTION AND TREATMENT

It's crucial to bear in mind that sun exposure can exacerbate melasma, so individuals are advised to minimise it, wear protective clothing and hats, and diligently apply sunscreen with high SPF. This not only aids in avoiding melasma's onset but also its intensification.

MELASMA MANAGEMENT

Different treatments are available to address melasma, depending on its severity and the patient's skin type. Additionally, medication factors, like hormone replacement therapy or contraceptive pills, can influence the condition's development. Therapeutic solutions range from topical agents, such as creams containing hydroquinone, corticosteroids, tretinoin, or azelaic acid, to more in-depth procedures like chemical peels and microneedling. As with all skin conditions, a consultation will be required to determine the optimal treatment plan.

MELASMA TREATMENT LEEDS

Melasma, while not a severe health threat, can be emotionally distressing. It's important to understand that it doesn't define you, and various treatments are within reach to manage and reduce its appearance. Whether it's topical solutions, peels, microneedling, or another treatment, we will provide you with the best advice, If melasma is a concern, get in touch to book a consultation, and let's discuss the best pathway forward to restore your skin's confidence.

Causes of Melasma

Melasma, a prevalent skin condition, often manifests as brown or grey-brown patches on the face. The exact cause is not yet fully understood, but it is believed to be primarily due to hormonal fluctuations and sun exposure. Factors such as pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, and certain medications can trigger hormonal changes. Sun exposure causes melanocytes, the cells that produce the skin's pigment, to increase melanin production, leading to dark patches on the skin.

The Impact of Melasma

Melasma might alter one's physical appearance significantly, which can lead to psychological implications such as lowered self-confidence and increased self-consciousness. The condition can affect social interactions and overall quality of life, emphasising the need for effective treatment options.
