Chemical peels work their magic by applying a carefully formulated solution to the skin, which causes controlled damage to the outer layers. This process starts to trigger the body's natural healing response, giving way to speedy skin regeneration and renewal. This is a breakdown of the process:
A specially formulated acidic solution is applied to the skin's surface.
The solution causes the top layer of dead skin cells to break down and eventually peel off.
This controlled damage stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in the deeper layers of the skin.
As the old, damaged skin peels away, it's replaced by new, healthier skin cells.
The renewed skin typically appears smoother, with improved texture and a more even tone.
The depth of the peel can be adjusted based on the specific formula used and the duration of application. Lighter peels affect only the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis), deeper peels can penetrate the dermis to give more dramatic results.
Derived from sugar cane, it's excellent for improving skin texture and reducing fine lines.
Particularly effective for acne-prone skin due to its ability to penetrate oil-clogged pores.
Used in medium-depth peels, it's effective for treating sun damage and pigmentation issues.
At Aesthetica Medical our goal is to successfully select the most appropriate peel type and strength for your unique skin requirements. Optimal results with minimal risk are the key here.
We only use carefully selected chemical peeling products in our clinic. Ones that our practitioners are highly experienced in. This allows us to have confidence that the peel we suggest will be the best one for your skin and its condition. As a doctor-led clinic, patient safety and satisfaction sit at the top of our priority list.
As with all our treatments we first invite you for an initial consultation. We want to ascertain the best treatment for your concern, whether that should be a skin peel or any of the other treatments we offer. We will perform a thorough analysis of your skin and discuss with you your goals and options.
The benefits and drawbacks will be discussed and you have the opportunity to ask any question about the proposed treatment. The purpose is for you to be completely informed about the process. We will also discuss all the ways in which we can help you get the most from your peel, both before the treatment and after. We'll recommend skin products to aid in the process as well.
The chosen peel is applied to your skin and gets to work to exfoliate for, depending on the peel, 30 - 90 minutes.
During the procedure, your comfort and safety are our top priorities. New skin cell growth is stimulated.
After your peel, you will be furnished with aftercare advice relating to the peel chosen. We stress the importance of following this advice as it will allow for optimal results. Sun protection is the most important factor for recovery. The careful use of mild skincare products post-treatment is important too. A light peel will typically have no recovery time attached as you should be able to carry out your normal activities straight after the peel
The Ideal candidate for a chemical peel is a patient who has fine lines, less than even skin tone, has acne scarring or pigmentation, and wants to improve these issues. There are some medical reasons why you might not be suitable but this is determined during your consultation.
To aid in recovery we advise patients not to wear make-up for at least 24 hours after the peel in the case of a light peel. For a deep peel, this advice may extend to up to 2 weeks post-treatment. Please check with us during your consultation.
This will depend on the type of peel, and the skin condition it is treating. As a general rule, the gap should be no less than 1 month for lighter peels. For deeper this may be 3-6 months.
You may experience a mild burning or stinging feeling during the procedure. If this is the case it is usually described as uncomfortable rather than painful. These effects will typically subside quickly after the treatment. We aim to make your treatment as comfortable as possible by continually monitoring as the treatment progresses.
